Resilience is the ability to adapt or bounce back after stressful situations or adversity.\u00a0 It increases capacity for change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Resilience can help you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Cope with the demands of college<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Prevent burnout, anxiety, and depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">See past challenges to find ways to enjoy life and better handle stress<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-50 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/cncc.mycareerfocus.org\/summer-2025-volume-3-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/Resilience.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"781\" height=\"521\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cncc.mycareerfocus.org\/summer-2025-volume-3-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/Resilience.png 781w, https:\/\/cncc.mycareerfocus.org\/summer-2025-volume-3-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/Resilience-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/cncc.mycareerfocus.org\/summer-2025-volume-3-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/Resilience-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 781px) 100vw, 781px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Here are six tips to build resilience to ease the transition:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Focus on what you can control<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">When facing change, a lot of what creates worry and stress is outside our immediate control. It can help to ask yourself, \u201cIs this something I can control?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">If the answer is yes, make a plan or take a step toward resolving the issue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">If the answer is no, ask yourself if you can change your attitude or views toward the situation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Recognize if you are feeling stress and take steps to manage it<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Acknowledge that what you feel is normal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Find someone trusted you can talk to if that is helpful.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Limit your exposure to news and social media.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Check on your thought patterns<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">How we think about things affects how we feel about them, and sometimes our first impression of things is not accurate. Some helpful ways to shift our thinking include:<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Turning crisis into opportunity. Viewing things as challenging, not dangerous. Viewing things as an opportunity, not a hassle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Nurturing thoughts that are kind to yourself.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Being present in the moment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Be flexible<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">The ability to be flexible and adaptive can help navigate and embrace change.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">It is good to have goals and expectations. It is also good to know when they need to be shifted.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Practice self-care<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Prioritize your needs. Give yourself space. You are important! Make sure to be intentional about checking your approach to time management, organization, problem-solving and stress management (sleeping well, eating well, exercising well, socializing well).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Ensure you get breaks. Find a place where you can be alone and have some reflective time. Even a brief step away to decompress can be helpful.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Keep nutritious snacks on hand you can easily pick up and eat anytime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Maintain a healthy sleep schedule and practice good sleep hygiene, such as turning off screens before bed and going to bed around the same time every night.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Keep a journal. Whether it is a gratitude journal, a simple recount of the day\u2019s events or writing down your thoughts and worries, journaling can be an effective self-care strategy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Find your support and use it!<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">No one can navigate this life alone all the time, especially when facing change and stress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Know who is in your corner and lean on them when you need it. There is great strength that comes with asking for help when you need it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">It can be helpful to pay attention to some of these things as they could be an indicator of need for additional support:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-49 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cncc.mycareerfocus.org\/spring-summer-2025-volume-1-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/bounceback-300x298.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cncc.mycareerfocus.org\/summer-2025-volume-3-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/bounceback-300x298.png 300w, https:\/\/cncc.mycareerfocus.org\/summer-2025-volume-3-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/bounceback-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/cncc.mycareerfocus.org\/summer-2025-volume-3-issue-1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/04\/bounceback.png 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Appearance:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Deterioration in grooming and hygiene<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Significant weight loss or gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Changes in clothing that do not match the changes in temperature<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Behaviors &amp; Emotions:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Poor or erratic attendance to class or frequent lateness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Feeling anxious, depressed, irritable, angry, or sad<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Lethargic or always tired<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Lack of interest in activities that are typically enjoyed<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Feelings of helplessness and\/or hopelessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Noticeable changes in habits<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Withdrawal from normal activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Uncharacteristically poor performance in classes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Excessive anxiety about class performance or evaluation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Frequent tearfulness or intense emotion (hostile and\/or dramatic behaviors, excessive and\/or rapid speech)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Substance use in an inappropriate setting<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Thoughts and\/or behaviors toward self-harm, suicide or harming others<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Cognitive Functioning:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Difficulty concentrating<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Increased forgetfulness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Obsessing over an event or issue<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Disjointed thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Thoughts that are out of touch with reality<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans Bold';\">Interpersonal Functioning:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Inappropriate dependency on professor\/mentor\/parent<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Avoidance of professor\/mentor\/peers\/parent<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Disruptive behaviors in class<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Unusual comments or behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Expressed concerns from peers, faculty and\/or staff<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Are you a student looking for mental health support?
