Michael Jackson, a level three (final semester) cosmetology student at CNCC’s Craig campus, essentially ‘grew up in a salon/boutique’. His grandmother, Gail, helped foster his love for cosmetology at a young age. He moved to Colorado about three years ago and started working immediately. During his time working jobs in and around Meeker, he found out about CNCC’s cosmetology program.

The proximity of the Craig campus allowed him to stay where he was, but to go after the career and industry he is passionate about. He loves helping people feel good in their own skin – and takes pride in being able to help them do that with services offered in his salon. He recently purchased a salon in Meeker and in the three-month timespan of owning this salon, his business has ‘outgrown’ the space! His future career goals include the ability to expand clientele by additional chairs/cosmetologists and other services for his clients.

Michael previously received some training in cosmetology at a different institution before coming to CNCC. One of the things he loves about CNCC is the class size – his previous school had upwards of 50 students in a class, while at

Michael at his salon – excited to expand operations!

CNCC, his class size maxes out at 12. This allows for much better hands-on-experience, and one-on-one training with the instructors and clients. Some of his favorite courses include learning about color and cuts – different styles and techniques to give his clients what they are after. The Salon on the Craig campus is a full salon where students work with clients on the services request and can apply what they are learning to the different services.

One thing Michael says surprises many students, is there is a lot of bookwork in this industry prior to the hands-on-experience. He recommends prospective students do their research about the program(s), amount of bookwork, actual classes etc. they will be learning – each program is different in what they offer. “The CNCC Cosmetology programs objective is to provide students with the fundamental skills to start their career in the beauty industry, and will provide students with up-to-date techniques, along with competency and accuracy to pass state regulated testing” explained Karly Dumas, Cosmetology lead faculty. Karly continued saying that “CNCC specializes in a well-rounded cosmetology application approach – and provides students with multiple experiences in the different fields (ie. Skin care/facials, waxing, hair coloring/cutting, manicure/pedicure etc.) …” with students being “…proficient in
hair services, skin services and nail services.”
